Empower's Power Network Division signed a project contract on 28 February 2014 with the Estonian grid company Elering concerning the construction of a 110 kV sea cable connection between the Estonian mainland and Saaremaa. The value of the contract is EUR 9.4 million. This is a turnkey solution which means that the project covers the design work, supply of material, and installation for the sea cable connection. The sea cable, to be built between the Virtsu and Võiküla substations, will be eight kilometres long and have a transfer capacity of 100 MW. The new cable connection will replace the 35 kV cable, which has reached the end of its life, and will make the transfer connection between the mainland and Saaremaa more reliable.
The project will be launched in May and completed by the end of 2015.
