The Finnish power grid company Fingrid Oyj and Empower have signed a contract agreement on the expansion of Fingrid's Vajukoski 220/110/20 kV substation located in Sodankylä in Northern Finland. The value of the agreement is approximately EUR 6 million. The contract includes the construction of a new 220/110/20 kV transformer station and a second main busbar at the 110 kV switching station.
Currently, a massive investment programme is underway in the Finnish power distribution network. During this decade, Fingrid will build 2,500 km of new power lines and more than ten new substations in the main grid. The investment programme enables the use of new future energy solutions in Finland. The Vajukoski substation is regionally significant, as its serves hydropower plants and the mining industry. Furthermore, it is also connected to the Norwegian main grid through Ivalo substation.
The construction work will begin in May 2015. The substation expansion will be commissioned in stages so that the project will be fully completed in early summer 2016.
“We are very satisfied with our extended cooperation with Fingrid. Empower is yet again building smart infrastructure in Finland,” says Timo Kiiveri, President of Empower`s Power Network Division.
