Landing at Empower via summer jobs and thesis work
Senior Specialist Laura Poikela
I work at Empower for Energy Intelligence business where I am responsible for developing EnerimEDM, the management system for electricity market data, and carrying out balance settlement services as a Senior Specialist. In Energy Intelligence business, we produce energy market services and supply information systems.
I have a master's degree in engineering, and I graduated from Tampere University of Technology in 2013. I majored in electricity networks and markets, and studied industrial engineering and management as a minor subject. A fellow student talked to me about Empower, and that is how I got here.
Energy and network companies as customers
We conduct balance settlements for the electricity markets in the EnerimEDM system. With the system, we are able to gather up volumes of measurement data obtained through our meter reading service or from external parties, such as network companies and other industrial operators. We use this information, for example, as initial information in distribution network balance settlements and invoicing. Our customers can automatically receive the electricity market information they need, and in the format they need.
I originally came to Empower as a summer employee at the Porvoo office in 2011. At first, I mainly focused on wholesale market services, that is, planned electricity procurement and prepared consumption estimates. After that summer, I continued at Empower as a thesis worker. Then, I worked in service production and development for the wholesale market and continued as an application specialist working with the EnerimEDM system. At the beginning of 2014, I started as a team leader. Next, I was appointed Service Manager, in addition to which I continued as a team leader and specialist. In May 2016, I was appointed Senior Specialist.
I carry out expert tasks, with customer service forming an integral part of my work. I design services, parameterize the EnerimEDM system and customise services for each customer. I spend part of my working week at the Porvoo office and part in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki.
Motivation through customer work and continuous development
During the day, I am frequently in contact with my customers and colleagues at different offices. Working with customers, together with being closely connected with our partners, is one of the best parts about my job.
Empower has a positive atmosphere where people can easily find help when needed. Even though my co-workers are located at different offices, we can easily work together using a web-based conferencing service. My colleagues are mainly located in Finland but, every now and then, I also support sales organisations in Sweden and Norway.
There sure is no shortage of new work or projects in the electricity market as the market is facing major changes and the industry is developing. My most interesting project involved a balance settlement and invoicing service where I had the opportunity to build the system from scratch. That project taught me a lot and allowed me to build up on my expertise.
I hope that I can continue to work with interesting projects. Because the electricity market is undergoing significant changes, it is important that we are able to update and develop our expertise at the same time. Currently, a standard Nordic balance settlement model is being developed in the electricity market. I want to be part of these changes and continue to develop services. Empower has a number of projects to take part in, as long as you are active and enthusiastic.
My hobbies are equally valuable to me aside my work. Last summer, I bought a motorcycle which I have used on shorter and longer trips in Finland. I also go to the gym and enjoy gardening.
